Ode to Sylvia Plath – c. Kate Whiteoak 2002

I know I’m no Sylvia Plath, sitting alone in the dark

waiting for my man to come home

trapped in a time warp by love

in love with the dream of my death

My life couldn’t be more mundane

safe on the sofa at night, cat snuggled up by the fire

man on his favourite chair

the TV a constant companion

the bed a welcoming friend

But at times I awake in the night

when my partner is sleeping beside me

and my heart is frozen with fear

and I feel so alone in the dark

that I know how she felt at the end

when she snuffed out her life like a light
